There was drama at urban primary school in Embu town after parents who were coming for a school meeting were blocked from entering the school. The parents had been told by their children on Friday last week that they were required by the headteacher today only to arrive at the school and denied entry. “We arrived here very early at around 7:30am then we found gate closed,we were told to come next week on Thursday ,are we students really because we came late with some minutes ?,”said Sharon Wangari a parent. They said the headteacher had not sent any official letter to call for the meeting but instead opted to sent verbal invite through pupils. The agitated parents alleged that the School board chairman was behind their restrictions from entering with collusion with the headteacher.
They also said they are being required by the school to pay Ksh 1,000 shillings as tution fee which they allege was not agreed. Another parent who was identified as Jane faulted the school administration for what she termed as misuse of parents. Jane said they had to abandon their duties to attend the meeting and they never knew this will happen to them. Efforts to get comment from school administration and school board were futile as they decline to talk to media. The government burned all forms of gatherings due to COVID-19 but the appetite by school principal to call parents in weekly meetings is worrying. Eastern Regional commissioner Isaiah Nakoru called for the investigation over the matter saying no tution money should parents pay in primary school. He said it was contrally to government directives to call meeting in school especially during this time of Covid 19. “Due to covid the government banned all gathering and the headteacher is still calling meeting that is against the law,”said Nakoru.
