The county government has set in motion a strategy to reclaim a prime piece of land in Kisii town where a dump site of over 40 years currently occupied.
Nyambera garbage disposal site had been described by NEMA as a public health hazard owing to the danger it posed to humans and livestock.
Addressing the media after inspecting the grounds, governor Simba Arati announced immediate plans to retrieve the land and transform the garbage into an economic venture.
He disclosed deployment of officers to identify locations where the garbage will be sorted out for recycling and manufacture of manure.
Arati further hinted on initiating a dialogue with owners of an adjacent parcel of land previously owned by a cooperative society with a view to repossessing it for public use.
Foot bridges closed by private developers within the town will be reopened to facilitate ease communication,he added.
Identification and location of a dumpsite for the town had been controversial with past efforts by the county government being thwarted by communities citing adverse effects to their public health.
