The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two senior officials from Mumias Level 4 Hospital for allegedly engaging in bribery.
The suspects, identified as Mr. William Mmasava, a Supply Chain Officer, and Mrs. Linet Kavaya, a Biomedical Engineer, were apprehended in a sting operation conducted on Wednesday May 21,2025.
According to EACC officials, the two officers were caught soliciting and accepting a bribe of ksh 200,000 in exchange for facilitating procurement processes at the hospital.
Investigators revealed that the suspects demanded kickbacks from suppliers seeking to secure contracts for medical equipment and essential hospital supplies.
Sources indicate that the investigation was triggered by a complaint filed on 16th May,2025, from a hospital vendor who reported being pressured to pay bribes so that the hospital could deposit his second instalment of ksh 650,000 after the first payment was made.
This is after he delivered an X-ray machine worth 1.4 million to the hospital. The commission acted swiftly, gathering evidence and coordinating with law enforcement to execute the arrests.
The suspects were taken to EACC regional offices for interrogation and are expected to face charges related to corruption under Kenya’s Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act. If convicted, they could face heavy fines and imprisonment.
Mumias Level 4 Hospital plays a vital role in providing healthcare to residents in Kakamega County. The corruption scandal has raised concerns about transparency in procurement processes within government institutions.
Authorities have urged individuals with information on corruption-related activities to come forward, promising strict action against offenders. The EACC continues its crackdown on unethical practices to uphold accountability in the country’s public sector.
