EACC officers in Garissa have arrested a Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Assistant Warden after demanding a bribe to sign compensation claim forms for a man who was attacked by a crocodile in River Tana. Duwane Muhumed Kheir, was attacked by a crocodile in River Tana while herding his goats at Denyere area. According to the victim’s kin Yasin Mohamed, the officer, Jimnah Pertet at first demanded a bribe of shs 100,000 to sign the forms and forward them to the national office for approval.
“We followed the right process and attacked letters from the area chief, The Garissa General hospital where he was treated and a letter from the OCS where the matter was reported but we stuck at the KWS,” Yasin said. “The officer demanded a bribe of shs 100,000 to sign the papers which we could not raise as a family. We however negotiated the amount to shs 40, 000,” he added. EACC’s Northeastern head Emmanuel Arunga said once they received the complaint, they conducted a prior investigation and established that there was indeed a demand.
“Once we received the complaint, we organized an operation at the KWS officers and recorded the said officer demanding the money. We also took statements from the victim and witnesses,” Arunga said. “We provided treated money for the amount they had agreed after which we arrested the suspect,” he added. The suspect is now held at the Garissa police station and will be charged with the offense of receiving a bribe contrary to section 6 (1) (a) as read with section 18(1) (2) of the bribery act, 2016 after completion of the investigation.
