Elderly delegate promises Arizona votes to Clinton

An elderly delegate, 102-year-old, from Arizona yesterday announced her state’s votes for Hillary Clinton, who will be the party’s first female nominee.

“Fifty-one votes for the next president of the United States of America, Hillary Rodham Clinton,” said Jerry Emmett from the convention floor in Philadelphia.

Emmett was born before women had the right to vote, with the legislation for the 19th Amendment passing Congress 97 years ago.

The Phoenix New Times profiled Emmett ahead of this week’s Democratic National Convention, noting her love of political paraphernalia, including a “Hillary Room.”

Isabel Baker, a delegate from Oklahoma, noted that she was born in 1929 — less than a decade after women were given the right to vote.

“I never thought that I would live to see this day. So tonight I’m deeply honored to help cast our state’s votes for the first women president of the United States — Hillary Clinton,” she added from the convention floor.
