Eliud Ngala Mwendwa Former Minister dies

Mr Mwendwa, the Former Minister passed on Tuesday morning at the age of 97. He hails from Ithookwe Village in Kitui Central.

Last year 2015 on September, five ukambani leaders, Titus Mbathi, John Mutinda, George Ndoto, Charity Ngilu and the sitting MP Makali Mulu visited the ailing Mr Mwendwa at his home.

The former minister is the son to Mwendwa Kitavi, a prominent colonial Kamba chief in Kitui. He was also the first MP for Kitui Central.

Mwendwa served in the pre-independence multiparty cabinet under Ronald Ngala of Kenya African Democratic Union (KADU).

After a bright teaching career, Eliud Ngala Mwendwa was appointed to Kenyatta’s first Cabinet, served in several ministries and was the architect of some landmark achievements.

He was one of the Ministers in the fifteen-man Cabinet that Kenya’s founding father, President Jomo Kenyatta formed at Kenya’s independence in 1963.

As Minister for Labour, he was instrumental in the conception of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and the National Youth Service (NYS).

He was also part of the post-independent cabinet in 1963 under former President Jomo Kenyatta. He was also the first MP for Kitui Central.
