Empowering Communities To Combat GBV: ODPP- UNFPA Collaborate On IEC Materials

By Dorothy Musyoka

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), recently hosted a two-day workshop at Starling Resort to develop Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials focused on the prevention and response to gender-based violence (GBV).

Led by Ms. Ebby Maswai, Head of the ODPP’s Sexual and Gender Based Violence Division, the workshop brought together a diverse group of experts and stakeholders to create impactful content that will educate the public and empower communities to actively combat GBV.

In her opening remarks, Ms. Maswai emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive educational resources that address both prevention and response strategies for GBV.

“These IEC materials are not just informational tools; they are catalysts for change that will equip individuals and communities with the knowledge and confidence to stand up against GBV,” she stated.

The materials, once finalized, will play a crucial role in raising awareness about the various forms of gender-based violence, its effects on victims and society, and the available resources for support and justice.

They will be widely distributed to schools, community centers, health facilities, and other public spaces to reach a broad audience.

By fostering community engagement and empowering individuals with information, the ODPP and UNFPA hope to create a society where gender-based violence is not only recognized and addressed but ultimately eradicated.
