FAMILIES OF TWO PEOPLE WHOM POLICE KILLED ON SATURDAY CRY FOR JUSTICE

On Saturday in Mombasa county, a multi-agency security team killed five people inside a house they were using as a stake out and there was a shootout. Police said the dead were criminals on the run.

But the families told the media their kin were arrested by police on March 17, and turned out dead on March 27.

The deceased include 62-year-old Benedicto Kago Mugure and 43-year-old Newton Kibara.

According to Juliana Nyambura Mugure, one of the diseased, Benedict Mugure was his brother and was a tuk-tuk driver.

Juliet Mugure, the widow of the second slain man, Newton Kibara Ndege, said her husband did menial jobs in a quarry to fend for his family.

According to the families and report by Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI), the arrests were reported at various police stations but no action was taken by police.

Kibara’s family booked the abduction at Dog Section police station and obtained OB number 45/17/3/21 at 8:25 pm. They made another report of a missing person after 72 hours. Several Mugure family members booked the incident separately at Kadzandani police station on different dates and got three OB numbers: 23/18/03/21, 15/20/3/2021 and 25/21/3/21.

MUHURI chairman, Khelef Khalifa questioned why people arrested by police end up turning dead. Contrary to police claim, Khalifa said there was no shootout. He said only one side of the wall of the room where the deceased were had bullet holes, indicating no one fired back.

The rights activist also said the two were never released or charged when police arrested them.

MUHURI called for a Commission of Inquiry in extrajudicial killings in Kenya. If the state does not establish such a Commission, MUHURI will call upon national and international civil society organizations to establish a tribunal to hear evidence on extrajudicial killings in Kenya, Khalifa said.

Francis Auma, MUHURI rapid response officer said they visited the scene of crime yesterday where they gathered evidence from the neighbor and later traced the bodies of the families killed kin men at Coast General Hospital mortuary.
