Fellaini foul minutes after substitution hands Everton point

A late penalty by defender Leighton Baines preserved Everton’s unbeaten home record in the Premier League this season after Manchester United had taken the lead at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Former Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini conceded the spot kick in the 89th minute, soon after coming on as a substitute.

Earlier, Zlatan Ibrahimovic put United in front just before the interval with a clever lob that went in off the bar and post after his former Ajax Amsterdam teammate, goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, unwisely rushed out of the penalty area.

The Belgian had been on the field for just two minutes when he unnecessarily lunged and tripped Idrissa Gueye, presenting Leighton Baines with the opportunity to strike an unstoppable 88th-minute penalty past David de Gea.

Everton were full value for the point based on their late rally but the game was further evidence that any progress United have made under Jose Mourinho is, at best, marginal and certainly yet to be seen on a consistent basis.

United, without the suspended Wayne Rooney, hit the frame of the goal with a drive by Ander Herrera but David de Gea had to make a series of saves as the home side improved.

It was United’s fifth draw in its last seven matches, leaving the team in sixth place and 13 points behind league leader Chelsea as Jose Mourinho’s side keep finding ways to throw away victory.

“We aren’t getting the results we deserve,” Mourinho said, in what is becoming a familiar post-match reaction.
