Like parents keeping track of their son’s progress in a foreign land, Ghanaian Premier League side Accra Hearts of Oak is keeping keen tabs on the exploits of their former player Gilbert Fiamenyo, now with SportPesa Premier League (SPL) side AFC Leopards.
The burly forward has scored four goals in the current campaign, to help lift the team to fourth on the 18 – team log.
Encouragement
Expressing their pride, the Ghanaian side sent out a message of encouragement to the player, and although they were wrong on the number of goals he has scored, the tweet will still serve to boost the player’s morale.
“Happy to hear Gilbert Fiamenyo is firing in goals for Kenyan giants @AFCLeopards. Six goals in seven games. Keep scoring, Gilbert!” read the tweet.
Fiamenyo was signed by Leopards in 2016 but due to paperwork issues, he could not get the clearance needed to feature for the team at that time.
He later travelled to his homeland only to return in January, just as another West African, Malian midfielder Moussa Sissoko who was at the team for the second part of the 2016 season, was checking out.
Career
Now 24, Fiamenyo started his career in 2004 with West African Football Academy, a satellite club of Dutch Eredivisie side Feyenoord. He later moved to Ghanaian Third Division side Red Bull FC for the 2006/7 season, where he scored 20 goals in 16 apparences.
His goal-scoring prowess saw him attract the interest of second tier side Power FC, crossing over for the 2007/8 during which he scored eight goals in 14 games. During the mid-season of 2008, aged 16, he signed a four-year deal with Premier League side Heart of Lions FC.
In his first 40 league games Fiamenyo scored 30 goals and went on to prove his mettle in following years, culminating with him getting a call up to the national team in 2011.
Hearts of Oak
At the end of his contract in 2012 he joined the Accra Hearts of Oak and in the three years he was with the club, he scored 27 goals in 35 appearances. He also gained a call up with Ghana Senior National Team, where he scored two goals in three games.
He later gained the interest of Kenya’s AFC Leopards in 2016, but with his transfer incomplete by the end of the midseason window, he stayed off as the team rode to a 13th place finish, one of their worst performances in recent history.
