Five suspects in the murder of former Kilifi Deputy governor Kenneth Kamto charged with nine counts

Five suspects arrested in connection to the murder of former Kilifi Deputy governor Kenneth Kamto have been charged with nine counts related to robbery with violence.

The accused Julius Gitonga, Joseph Amwayi, Florence Mwanza, Joseph Shoi and Clementina Nerima appeared before Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Henry Nyakweba.

The suspects were charged with nine counts of robbery with violence, being in possession of fire arm and ammunition without licence, handling stolen goods, being in possession of a firearm and ammunition without a license.

They are charged that on December 12 last year, jointly with others not before court, while armed with a pistol, stole three mobile phones valued at Sh 28,000 belonging to Kamto.

The accused are also accused of violently stealing a Techno model phone valued at Sh 10,000 from Kamto’s wife Fauzia Dear Omar and another one valued at Sh 2000 belonging to Kamto’s house help Uchi Zuma. The court was told that during or immediately after the robbery, they used actual violence on the victims.

Gitonga, Mwanzia, Shoi were separately slapped with additional charges of handling stolen goods. The charge sheet read that on December 18 last year at Mnanzi Moja within Kisauni sub-county in Mombasa and in the course of stealing, dishonestly undertook the retention of the mobile phone.

The suspects were also charged with violently stealing from a Chinese national Adnan Chi Tung.

The charges read that on September 27, 2017 at Nyali estate plaza, they stole house hold goods, jewelleries, laptop, a pistol and two boxes of ammunition all valued at Sh 3 million.

The suspects denied that charges. The magistrate ordered Gitonga, Amwayi, Mwanza to be detained at the Shimo la Tewa prison. The other two suspects; Shoi and Nerima were released on a bond of Sh200,000 each and a surety of the same amount.

The case will be mentioned on February 4.
