Former Ambassador Lazarus Amayo Appointed Special Envoy to AU

President Ruto has appointed the outgoing Kenyan ambassador to the United States, Lazarus Amayo to serve as a Special Envoy of the African Union Champion for Institution Reforms.

“Head of State has, with the approval of the Public Service Commission (PSC), appointed Ambassador Lazarus Amayo as the Special Envoy of the African Union Champion for Institutional Reforms,” read part of the statement from the head of the public service, Felix Kosgei.

According to the head of the public service, Lazarus is expected to work closely with the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs in leading and executing the President Mandate as the African Union Champion for Institutional Reforms.

“The Special Envoy is expected to play a critical role in driving AU’s institutional reforms in liaison with the State Department for Foreign Affairs and the African Union institutions,” wrote the head of the public service.

Lazarus comes with vast experience of holding senior public positions in the previous years.

He has been an Ambassador to the United Nations, High Commissioner of Kenya to the United Kingdom, Permanent Representative of Kenya to the International Maritime Organization and the Commonwealth Organization.

Additionally, the Special Envoy has also served as Director for Europe and Commonwealth Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr. Amayo also served as a High Commissioner of Kenya to Malawi and Zambia at different points in time.

He also served as a Permanent Representative to COMESA.
