Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to Defend Himself in Ksh. 20 Million Graft Case

The Anti-Corruption Court in Nairobi has ruled that former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko, alongside Anthony Otieno Ombok and ROG Security Limited, must defend themselves against charges of extortion in a graft case involving Ksh. 20 million.

The ruling, delivered by Hon. C.N. Ondieki, comes after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) successfully appealed the initial dismissal of the case.

The appeal, filed under Nairobi High Court Anti-Corruption Appeal No. E016 of 2022, was upheld on December 22, 2024.

“As a result, Sonko, alongside Anthony Otieno Ombok and ROG Security Limited are required to counter the charges relating to extortion of Ksh. 20 million from a supplier in order to facilitate payments for work done at the Nairobi County during his tenure as county chief,” stated the ODPP.

The case revolves around allegations that Sonko and his co-accused extorted Ksh. 20 million from a supplier to facilitate payments for services rendered to the Nairobi County during Sonko’s tenure as governor.

The court found the DPP’s evidence sufficient to warrant a defence from the accused parties.

“The Anti-Corruption court in Nairobi has ruled that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) tendered sufficient evidence to warrant the former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and two others to defend themselves in a graft case,” noted the ODPP.

The defence hearing is scheduled to commence on May 15, 2025, marking a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat corruption within public offices
