France nail Germany 2-0 in Euro 2016 semis.

France will play Portugal in the final of Euro 2016 after beating Germany 2-0 in Marseille thanks to two goals from the tournament’s top scorer Antoine Griezmann.

Schweinsteiger conceded a penalty after controversial handball and Griezmann netted at the end of the first half from the spot.

Griezmann scored again in the second half after a mistake from German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer handed him an easy tap in.

This is the first time that France have beaten Germany in the finals of a competition since 1958.

“We suffered but we knocked them out,” said French coach Didier Deschamps after the game in which Germany dominated possession.

The win sparked wild scenes of celebration in the Velodrome stadium in Marseille and in fanzones, living rooms and bars around the country.

“Antoine is a great player and he proved that again tonight in everything he did,” Deschamps said. “He works very hard and, along with Olivier Giroud, from a defensive perspective he made sure we were a very compact unit.

“He’s a very important player, as he has been for Atletico all season. At the Euro, he’s scored goals, set up teammates and got others around him playing well.”

France reached the final after seeing off Republic of Ireland and Iceland in the first two games of the knockout stage, but Deschamps said every game so far has been difficult.

“We haven’t had easy games. Germany were the best side [we’ve played]; we did what we needed to today,” the coach said.

France will now play Portugal in Euro 2016.
