Gachagua Receives Somalia’s President Ahead Of Environment Summit

On Wednesday 28th February, DP Gachagua received Somalia’s President H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.

President Mohamud is in the country for the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) convention that has been taking place from 26th February. The sixth session Of the United Nations Environment Assembly is a five-day event that will be running until 1st March 2024.

Gachagua was accompanied by Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon Aden Duale, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi, and Somalia Ambassador to Kenya Jabril Ibrahim.

Sharing via his X page, the deputy president reaffirmed bilateral ties between the two countries. ” Kenya and Somalia enjoy deep-rooted ties mutually beneficial to both countries. On behalf of President @WilliamsRuto, it was a pleasure to receive Somalia President H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at JKIA, Nairobi.”

President Mohamud’s visit comes after the state visit by Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who landed in the country on Tuesday evening and was received by the President, William Samoei Ruto. The prime Minister’s visit would be the first since President Ruto was elected.

Abiy’s most recent visit to Kenya took place on December 9, 2020, for the official inauguration of the One-Stop Border Post at Moyale in Marsabit.

His previous State visit to Kenya occurred in June 2018, during which he and then-President Uhuru Kenyatta pledged to enhance their diplomatic relations to a strategic level.

His visit is said to strengthen the friendly relations between Kenya and Ethiopia on economic, social, security, and foreign relations.
