Getting Back Public Land

The government has intensified its campaign of repossessing public land grabbed by private investors and cartels in Kisii. The repossession is expected to take place throughout the country within a period of five years. So far 3000 title deeds have been revoked since the exercise kicked-off nationally.

National Land Commission Vice Chair Abigail Mbagaya has warned all private developers who own public land across the country to be ready to convince the commission that they acquired the portions through the right procedures.

Mbagaya spoke at a meeting with 6 National Land Commissioners in Kisii where the commission launched a public land repossession campaign in which a market,a fire-station,rehabilitation centre and government houses are public utilities whose land is in private ownership and have been embarked for repossession by the government.

Mbagaya also disclosed a total of 150 suspected title deeds were being scrutinized with a view to establish their authenticity.

Land issue is so emotive in the Kisii region that most criminal cases and deaths have been associated to it.
