Ryan Giggs believes Wayne Rooney has been left ‘confused’ by Jose Mourinho’s decision not to play him in midfield for Manchester United.
“I have seen a player who’s going through a sort of transitional period,” Giggs, a pundit for ITV’s coverage of the England game, said of Rooney’s form over the last year.
“I went through it at 29 or 30 when I was no longer the winger who could just knock it past the defender and go the other side. You lose that pace as you get older,” he added.
Giggs said he felt sorry for United Skipper noting that he is not yet done and Rooney has a lot to offer at the club.
“And I feel a little bit sorry for him in a way. Towards the end of last season and for England in the summer he played in that deeper role and then he gets told at the beginning of the season, more or less, he’s going to play at number nine or number 10.
“So he’s probably a little bit confused but he needs to knuckle down, work hard, work at his game, the only way you can get it back is on the training pitch and when he does get back in you’ve got a talented and experienced player.”
