Government take measures on containing drought

The Government has affirmed that there is enough food to feed the country despite the ravaging drought in parts of the country.

Speaking during the first Africa-wide post harvest congress in Nairobi yesterday, Agriculture CS Willy Bett, noted that there is 21 million bags of maize expected to last until June this year.

The CS also said that if the drought persists till June, then the government may exploit other options of ensuring the country is food secure.

Meanwhile, the government has also set aside Kshs 221 million for water distribution in drought stricken counties. This is according to water principal secretary Fred Segor who said the government is committed in containing the situation that has adversely affected locals without water in arid areas of the country.

Several parts of the country including Marsabit, Baringo and Kilifi have experienced acute water shortage forcing locals to feed on wild fruits and even emaciated livestock.
