The Cabinet Secretary for Interior Prof. Kindiki has declared Monday, June 17 a public holiday to mark Eid-Al-Adha (Idd-Ul-Azha).
The Hon. CS Prof. Kithure Kindiki made the announcement on Friday in a gazette notice dated June 14, 2024.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares Monday, the 17th of June 2024, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-Al-Adha,” says the notice.
In Islam, Idd-ul-Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, occurs on the 10th day of the third month after Ramadan.
It signifies the conclusion of Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca as recognized by the Muslims.
The pilgrimage to Mecca is a compulsory religious duty for all adult Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the journey, and it must be performed at least once in one’s lifetime.
The essence of Eid-al-Adha is to follow in the footsteps of the Prophet Mohammed and to reflect on the devotion of Muslims to God.
It also Commemorate the willingness of Prophet Abraham to follow God’s instructions to sacrifice his own son Isak.
