Gubernatorial aspirants in Murang’a have intensified their campaigns as the election dates draw closer.
Three candidates over the weekend crisscrossed various parts of the county wooing voters with promises if they manage to succeed governor Mwangi wa Iria.
On his part, Farmers Party Candidate Irungu Nyakera who toured parts of Kangema Sub County promised to establish a fertilizer manufacturing plant if elected as next Murang’a governor.
Nyakera observed local farmers have struggled to access fertilizer saying a plant will ensure the commodity is cheap and easily accessible.
Agriculture, he noted is key economic activity in the county thus the need to support the sector by ensuring farmers get subsidized farm inputs.
He noted that tea and coffee are major cash crops in the region saying his administration will not only avail cheap inputs to boost production but also streamline the value chain of the produce.
“A fertilizer plant will enable our farmers to easily get cheap input to boost production of their crops. Currently the price of the commodity is too high due to poor production,” he added.
Nyakera, former planning principal secretary, is basing his campaigns on reforms he has championed in tea and coffee sectors.
Elsewhere, Jubilee gubernatorial candidate Jamleck Kamau said if elected, he will ensure there is no corruption in his administration.
Corruption, he asserted, is to blame for lack of key services in the county saying the vice has denied the local access to quality medical care.
Kamau who campaigned in parts of Kangema said he will streamline service delivery to ensure locals get maximum benefits of all devolved functions.
“I promise to end corruption in the county government. The vice has seen only few people benefit with jobs and hospitals operate without drugs.
“Due to corruption, the county cannot boast of any major project done by the current administration and I want to assure you under my leadership, various projects cutting across all key sectors will be initiated,” he told residents of Kangema.
On his campaign trail in Mathioya Sub County, Irungu Kang’ata who is vying on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket promised to build a Level 4 hospital in the area.
He said people of Mathioya are forced to seek medication in public hospitals in the neighbouring Othaya sub county affirming that one of his priorities is to build a big health facility to serve the area.
Kang’ata drummed support for UDA candidates asking the locals to elect only those vying on the deputy president’s political party.
Other aspirants eying for the seat include, Wairagu wa Maai (DP), Joseph Mbai (Usawa Kwa Wote), Dr. Moses Mwangi (Safina) and Henry Maina (independent).
