In a bold effort to strengthen Kenya’s healthcare system, Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Debora Barasa Mlongo has reaffirmed her commitment to advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) during a crucial meeting with the Ministry of Health’s top management.
The meeting, which brought together key stakeholders in the health sector, concentrated on the strategic priorities necessary to achieve President William Ruto’s vision of accessible and affordable healthcare for all Kenyans.
“As a team we will deliver universal health coverage and with it quality, affordable healthcare services for all Kenyans,” stated Dr.Mlongo.
The foundation set by her predecessor, Nakhumicha S. Wafula, is being further developed upon by Dr. Mlongo, who recently took office.
Dr. Mlongo emphasized the need to strengthen community programs and ensure the availability of essential health commodities, particularly maternal and child health services, to provide accessible and affordable healthcare to all Kenyans.
“It’s time to deliver, and we must ensure that every Kenyan has access to affordable healthcare,” she affirmed.
Dr. Mlongo emphasized on a consultative approach and stakeholder engagement,stressing the importance of collaboration at all levels of the health sector.
The CS encouraged the staff to actively communicate the government’s UHC agenda to the public, highlighting the need to gather and relay feedback to guide the Ministry’s initiatives.
“We need to communicate and also bring back the feedback,we all can make a change.I want us to work together in harmony in synergy so we can deliver this to Kenyans,” stated Dr.Mlongo.
On 9th August 2024 Principal Secretary State Department for Medical Services Ministry of Health Harry Kimtai, expressed his satisfaction with new health cabinet secretary noting that she would ensure Kenyans attain quality medical services.
“Her extensive expertise in the health sector will aid in the realization and execution of Universal Health Coverage, ensuring Kenyans receive the greatest medical care available,” said PS Kimtai.
Dr. Mlongo was accompanied by Principal Secretaries Mr. Harry Kimtai (Medical Services) and Ms. Mary Muthoni Muriuki (Public Health and Professional Standards), along with Director General of Health Dr. Patrick Amoth among others.
