Health Ministry Advances Taifa Care Initiative to Accelerate Universal Health Coverage

The Ministry of Health has advanced Taifa Care Initiative to accelerate Universal Health Coverage for the people of Kenya.

According to the Ministry of Health Taifa Care is the government’s initiative aimed at achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all Kenyans, ensuring equitable and affordable access to quality healthcare.

On January 16, 2025, Dr. Deborah Barasa, the Cabinet Secretary for Health, convened a fruitful meeting with the chairpersons and Chief Executive Officers of Semi-Autonomous Government Agencies (SAGAs) under the Ministry of Health to review progress and address some of the challenges facing achievement of UHC.

She was accompanied by Principal Secretaries Mr. Harry Kimtai, responsible for Medical Services, and Ms. Mary Muthoni, overseeing Public Health, as well as Dr. Patrick Amoth, the Director General for Health.

The meeting also focused on reviewing progress of Taifa Care, addressing challenges, and formulating strategies to accelerate the achievement of UHC.

“Key discussions included enhancing collaboration and accountability among SAGAs to ensure effective service delivery. Areas of focus were improving healthcare financing, increasing access to essential health products and technologies (HPTs), and advancing digital health solutions,” Ministry of Health said.

The Ministry of Health reaffirmed it’s commitment to strengthening the health sector and ensuring that every Kenyan has access to affordable and quality healthcare.

Additionally, it reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and ensuring that all Kenyans have access to affordable and quality healthcare services.
