Heavy security present during today parliament special sitting

There was heavy security today at the parliament as the debacle between CORD Members of Parliament and authorities as they stood to prevent the Mace from finding its way to the National Assembly.

MPs and journalists were forced to walk to the house as members of the public were locked out.

There was a heavy police presence at Parliament Buildings, with officers blocking cars from passing through Parliament Road.

During the debate, the Mace became the most protected asset of the House with a guard on each side.

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) lawmakers were against some amendments on the election act.

The amendment provides that if technology fails, the manual system shall be used to identify voters and transmit results.

“The commission shall use the complementary mechanism referred to in sub-section (1) for identification and transmission of election results only where the technology initially deployed fails,” In subsection 14b(2), it proposes.
