Homa Bay Gears Up For Historic Madaraka Day 2025

Homa Bay County is abuzz with excitement as it prepares to host the 62nd Madaraka Day national celebrations on June 1, 2025, at the newly renovated Raila Odinga Stadium.

This marks a historic milestone as it will be the first time the county hosts this significant national event, which commemorates Kenya’s attainment of internal self-governance in 1963.

The stadium, now capable of hosting 12,000 people, has undergone a Sh500 million facelift, including new terraces, a natural turf, track, and floodlight masts, ensuring it meets the standards for such a grand occasion.

Politically, the event is a landmark for Homa Bay, showcasing its growing prominence.

“Homa Bay County was chosen to host the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, with final touches being made at the main venue of the event and other facelift,” Principal Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Ann Ng’etich, emphasized the event’s significance during an inspection tour.

President William Ruto is expected to attend, marking his second visit to the stadium after a football match in December 2024.

The theme, “Blue economy and maritime affairs,” highlights the government’s focus on leveraging aquatic resources for sustainable development, a fitting choice given Homa Bay’s proximity to Lake Victoria.

Economically, the celebrations are set to boost the region.

“Business is already booming but expect more what will limit us, but we are set to host all visitors and reap the benefits that come with hosting such event,” John Omolo, a local business owner, shared.

The event is expected to spur tourism, create jobs, and stimulate local businesses, with infrastructure upgrades like expanded roads and a modern fish market further enhancing accessibility and trade.

Socially, the event fosters unity, with cultural performances and a military parade set to celebrate Kenya’s heritage.

This historic celebration not only honors Kenya’s freedom fighters but also positions Homa Bay as a hub for future national events, promising long-term growth and recognition.
