Boniface Manono, found himself in an awkward situation after his walk through city center led himself to the jaws of “hungry” and angry police and before he knew what had happened at the spot he had already collapsed after he was brutally attacked by police.
The 36-years-old Boniface admitted that he was brutally assaulted by anti-riot police. According to his statements as he spoke to the media after he recovered, Manono was on his way from Westlands when he came face to face with men with rungus and teargas.
“I was walking on University Way headed towards Nyerere Road. At around 1pm, while at the roundabout to Nyerere road, a tear gas canister exploded at my feet. I ran towards Uhuru Highway,” he said.
Boniface said that he saw a group of other people fleeing for safety and decided to join them, but the officers flushed them out and he attempted to run away.
“Kukimbia, police mmoja akanipga sweep nikaanguka. Ile time nilijisikia, nilipata watu wa media wakiniongelesha,” he posed. “Wakaniuliza ama niko sawa, nikawaambia ndio. Ndipo wakanichukua na kunisadia nikatoka pale”
Manono states that he was unconscious when police assaulted him noting that he was helped up by journalists later on.The man who lives in Gachie said he could not gather the strength to get home with his attempts to go to his uncle’s place in Kibera ending at Uhuru Park.
He was later picked up from the park by his uncle Monday evening and taken to his home in Kibera.“I was in pain but I tried to walk and made it all the way to Uhuru Park before I gave up. I slept at Uhuru Park until at around 6pm when my uncle came and got me, and took me to his house in Kibera. I have been in the house until a well-wisher came and brought me to Coptic Hospital for treatment,” he said
The way police reacted to the un-armed protesters has been condemned by many organizations and people who are requesting for a legal action against them.
