Nyanza leaders should mobilize residents to register in the second phase of mass voter registration that began yesterday. Central Nyanza IEBC coordinator George Oyugi said leaders are not active in ensuring all eligible voters are registered. He said they are targeting to register 860,000 new voters in Central Nyanza, which comprises Homa Bay, Kisumu and Siaya counties.
The IEBC has distributed enough BVR kits in every ward for smooth registration, the coordinator said.
“We have at least six kits per ward [depending on population] and those seeking transfers are required to visit the constituency office,” he said.
Oyugi made the comments during a press briefing at his office on Monday after touring various registration centres in Kisumu Central subcounty.
He said there are many uncollected IDs and the owners should collect them and register to vote. In Kisumu Central, a good number of residents streamed in to register and confirm if they are registered.
George Omondi, the Kisumu Central IEBC coordinator, said they are targeting to register 250,000 voters. “We are prepared to register as many voters as possible,” he said.
