On Friday, 6th June 2025, Albert Omondi Ojwang’ was arrested in Homa Bay County by DCI detectives for the offence of false publication.

Records indicate that he was transported to Nairobi, where he was questioned by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters on Saturday.

While addressing the media from the Central Police Station, the Inspector-General of National Police Service, Douglas Kanja, stated that Ojwang was booked at Central Police Station under Occurrence Book (OB) Number 136/7/6/2025 at 2135 hours.

Ojwang was found unconscious during a routine cell inspection and was immediately rushed to Mbagathi Hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“In line with statutory requirements, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) was duly notified to commence investigations,” the police boss said.

IPOA’s chair Hassan confirmed that investigations on the incident have already begun.

Additionally, to ensure a thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Inspector General of Police ordered the interdiction of some officers with immediate effect.

“The Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Central Police Station, the Duty Officer on duty during the night in question, the Cell Sentry on duty at the time, all officers who were on duty at the Report Office that night and Any other officer found to have been on duty or otherwise involved during the incident,” he added.

Speaking in the company of Deputy Inspector General, Kenya Police Service (DIG) Eliud Lagat, Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli and IPOA’s Chair Hassan, IG Douglas Kanja revealed that the DIG KPS Eliud Lagat filed a complaint of defamation against Ojwang’, prompting an investigation leading to his arrest.

“There was a complaint that had been launched by the DIG KPS about his name being tarnished. It is on that basis that investigations were being done because he also has a right to be protected by the same law,” he said.

“The National Police Service condoles with the family, friends and relatives of the late Albert Omondi Ojwang’, and asks for their patience as we get to the bottom of this matter,” the IG condoled.
