The 39-year-old Portuguese who guided Olympiakos to the Greek title last term before resigning replaces Mike Phelan, who was sacked on Tuesday.
Silva’s first match in charge of the bottom-placed club will be tomorrow’s FA Cup third-round tie with fellow relegation battlers Swansea City.
“Marco is a young coach who has impressed us with his philosophy and football style,” said Hull vice-chairman Ehab Allam in a statement on the club’s website.
“He has a great track record and we feel this is a bold and exciting appointment in our aim to retain the club’s Premier League status.”
Silva signed a contract until the end of the season by which time he hopes to have done enough to keep the Tigers in the Premier League. With the Tigers bottom of the table, Silva knows the odds are against him and his players to avoid relegation back to the Championship.
Silva, who previously managed has brought with him the backroom staff he has worked with in the past. Neil McDonald, Bobby Mimms and Stan Ternant all left before Silva’s appointment. Tony Pennock was offered the chance to return to City’s U23s team or leave the club and he opted to leave.
The new man in charge wasted little time in starting his new job and no sooner had the publicity photos were taken, Silva was taking his first training session with his new players.

“We are already working hard with Marco and his team to deliver some key additions to our squad during this transfer window.”
Silva will be joined by assistant head coach Joao Pedro Sousa, first-team coach Goncalo Pedro and goalkeeping coach Hugo Oliveira.
Phelan, who was a former assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, was sacked on Tuesday after a 3-1 defeat to West Brom.
