The Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS), Douglas Kanja, has issued a press briefing aimed at reassuring the public of the Service’s dedication to safety, security, and professional policing across Kenya.

Established under Article 243 of the Constitution of Kenya (2010), the NPS carries a significant constitutional mandate to ensure public safety and national security.

In the statement released on June 24, 2025, the Inspector General emphasized that the Service is apolitical, operates with full independence and is firmly guided by professionalism and discipline.

“To ensure accountability, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law, the National Police Service is under the oversight of multiple independent bodies including the Internal Affairs Unit and the National Police Service Commission,” said IG Kanja.

The press briefing directly addressed public concerns about police conduct, noting that every instance of police misconduct is handled swiftly and transparently.

Despite isolated cases of wrongdoing, the Service remains focused on delivering people-centered, accountable, and efficient policing.

Highlighting constitutional provisions, the statement affirmed every citizen’s right to peaceful assembly and the right to petition.

However, it cautioned that any conduct straying into unlawful assembly or destruction of property will not be tolerated, citing the Penal Code and Public Order Act as guiding laws.

“For avoidance of doubt, Article 37 of the Constitution and also the penal code CAP 63, Sec 78 and 82, clearly provides the conditions necessary for a lawful assembly.Any contrary conduct constitutes an unlawful and a riotous assembly,” stated IG Kanja.

“ The National Police Service shall at all times lawfully and firmly prevent any breach of peace by any groups of persons, acting contrary to the provisions of the law,” he added.

“The public is also urged to refrain from provoactive acts, directed to police officers in execution of their duties,” read the statement.

The Inspector General called upon the public to support law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities through established hotlines or nearesrt police stations.

The NPS remains steadfast in its mission to protect lives and property, dismantle criminal networks, and ensure a safe environment for all citizens and visitors alike.
