On Tuesday, a multi-agency team with officers from Makindu Police Station, DCI Makindu and KWS Officers arrested 4 suspects in possession of 6 pieces of ivory weighing 6.8 kgs. The 4, Stephen Kitavi (34), Peter Kioko (39), Shadrack Kyalo Muange (47) and Danstan Kisyoka (54) were apprehended in Makindu in Makueni County.
The six pieces of ivory tusks weighing 6.8 Kg have a street value of Ksh. 2 million.
The suspects were detained at Makindu Police Station and arraigned in court on March 13, 2024. The National Police Service thanked members of the public for their cooperation in the case.
On 25th February 2024, Police in Trans Nzoia arrested two suspects they found transporting 11 pieces of ivory weighing 51kgs.
In 2018, Police and Kenya Wildlife Service rangers arrested three suspects in Makueni for illegal possession of ivory worth Sh48 million. County police commander Joseph Napeiyan said the three were arrested in different raids on the Nairobi – Mombasa highway on Sunday.
One of the suspects was arrested at Malili town and two others at Mtito Andei, the police boss said.
Joseph Kimilu was arrested in Malili with seven pieces of elephant tusks weighing 234kgs – all estimated at Sh46.8 million.
