A-decades long wait for Gatukuyu residents in Gatundu North to have a modern market has now come to an end after Kiambu County commenced construction of a new ultra – modern market expected to host over 900 traders.
The project which entails the construction of new market sheds, laying of concrete floor, renovation of toilets, and the drilling of boreholes and putting up water tanks is expected to be complete in six months ending years of unconducive trading environment for hundreds of traders who sell their wares at the busy market.
Speaking during a groundbreaking ceremony at the market, governor James Nyoro revealed that the new market will also entail establishment of a dispensary and a Huduma centre to enable traders and buyers to get maximum services at the first town at the entry of Gatundu North from Thika.
He said that the new market which will be put up at a cost of Sh 30 million will also be fenced and roads leading to it improved to motorable standards.
Traders who spoke to journalists decried having endured harsh conditions as they conducted their business especially during heavy rains and sunny seasons.
They said that the market has over the years been a political tool for leaders seeking positions of power who after clinching positions end up making fake promises about the market’s rehabilitation.
The market which is currently made of makeshift shanties will upon completion be a major reprieve to the traders who will now operate in safe, secure, clean and dignified trading spaces, a situation that is also expected to change the old-age face of Gatukuyu shopping centre which is characterized by old buildings.
Hundreds of traders and shoppers dealing with retail and wholesale of agricultural produce such as potatoes, cabbages, tomatoes, pineapples, avocados, alongside new and second-hand merchandise and manufacturing units urged the devolved unit to fast-track the project to end their longstanding trading woes.
On the flipside, the traders will have to be relocated to allow for the construction works which governor Nyoro said will commence immediately.
