Members of Parliament from the Jubilee coalition have unanimously agreed to fully support a Bill that seeks to deter individuals from hopping from one party to another, a decision reached after meeting the Deputy President William Ruto at his Karen Home.
Addressing the press, the leader of Majority in Senate, Aden Duale said they had agreed to support the two bills that focus on Electoral reforms.
“After fruitful deliberations, the Members unanimously agreed to support the two Bills before the Legislature relating to Electoral Reforms,” stated the statement in part.
“In the course of the deliberations, the Members buttressed the need to professionalize and institutionalize political parties so as to foster a vibrant democratic environment that supports ideology based politics.”
The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill 2016 is set to be tabled in Parliament on Thursday and worked on before the parliament goes on recess.
The bill bars members who happen to lose nomination contests from moving to other parties. and also proposes political parties to submit a contestants’ list to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) 21 days before the nominations.
