Kakamega woman delivers five healthy babies

One Eveline Namukhula, a 28 year old mother from Sisokhe Navakholo Sub County in Kakamega has delivered five healthy babies; three girls and two boys. The babies were delivered with between 1.4 to 1.8 kgs.

When Eveline went to hospital, she expected to deliver triplets according to a scan. The delivery of five came as a shock to the mother of four which now grows her brood to nine.

Dr. Githinji Kongo who delivered the babies at the Kakamega Level 5 hospital said this was a very rare occurrence however assuring that the children and mother were all in good health.

Eveline’s previous history of delivering twins might have contributed to her ability to deliver quintuplets, Kongo added.

Health CEC in Kakamega County Rachel Okumu who visited the new mother said the County government will cover her hospital bills for a year as she was enrolled for the Oparanya care.

The Kenya demographics and health survey 2014 shows that the fertility rate of women from the western region stands at five children.

According to World Urbanization Prospect, Kakamega County has a population of 1,660,651 the third largest in Kenya after Nairobi and Kiambu counties respectively.
