Kenya and Cuba Strengthen Health Ties

Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary, Aden Duale, met with Cuban Ambassador Inés Fors Fernández to enhance health cooperation between the two nations, focusing on leveraging Cuba’s community-based primary healthcare model to strengthen Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage.

CS Aden Duale’s meeting with Cuban Ambassador H.E. Ms. Inés Fors Fernández took place at Afya House, this was aimed at deepening Kenya-Cuba health cooperation.

In the meeting they explored partnerships to strengthen Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC), drawing from Cuba’s renowned community health model.

Key areas discussed during the meeting included digital health, telemedicine, biotech support for local vaccine production and technical exchanges.

Cabinet secretary Aden Duale also proposed a structured MoU to formalize collaboration in service delivery, training, pharmaceutical manufacturing and health innovation.

“Grateful for Cuba’s ongoing support of 84 doctors deployed across counties, 48 Kenyan doctors trained and impactful joint programmes improving care in underserved areas,” stated CS Aden Duale.

This partnership will enable Kenya to tap into Cuba’s expertise, improving healthcare outcomes, particularly in underserved areas, and advancing UHC implementation.

Also in the meeting were PS Ms. Mary Muthoni (Public Health) and Director General for Health, Dr. Patrick Amoth.
