The Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Moses Wetang’ula, has advocated for strengthened parliamentary diplomatic relations between Kenya and Iraq.
This statement was made on Tuesday afternoon following a courtesy visit from Dr. Akram Slaiman, the Charge d’Affaires of the Republic of Iraq to Kenya, at the Speaker’s office.
“The discussions focused on enhancing the longstanding diplomatic ties between Kenya and Iraq, with a particular emphasis on parliamentary cooperation,” the National Assembly said on X.
The Parliament announced that the meeting reached a consensus to form a Parliamentary Friendship Group between the two legislative bodies, to enhance parliamentary diplomacy and reinforce democratic governance.
This initiative is anticipated to promote increased cooperation between the two countries on legislative matters
“Iraq, as the world’s fifth-largest oil producer, presents significant opportunities for trade in petroleum-based products. With the country experiencing increased stability following years of conflict, discussions highlighted the potential for enhanced economic cooperation, particularly in the energy sector”, noted Speaker Wetang’ula.
The Speaker reiterated its commitment to supporting Iraq’s reconstruction initiatives and expressed a desire to investigate new opportunities for trade and investment. In response, Dr. Slaiman emphasized Iraq’s dedication to enhancing collaboration with Kenya in essential areas, including education, security, and trade.
Significantly, Iraq has offered scholarship opportunities to Kenyan students, reinforcing the cultural and academic connections between the two countries.
Speaker Wetang’ula underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue and cooperation among Iraq and its neighbours, emphasizing that a peaceful Middle East contributes to global stability.
Both parties expressed optimism about the future of Kenya-Iraq relations, with a shared commitment to fostering deeper engagement and exploring new areas of collaboration.
