Kenya Confirms Third Mpox Case, Active Surveillance Intensifies

The Ministry of Health has reported a third confirmed case of Mpox in Kenya. The latest case involves a 30-year-old female patient in Nairobi who recently traveled to Uganda.

In a press release dated 30th August, 2024, she is currently in stable condition and is receiving care in an isolation unit. This new development brings the total number of Mpox cases in the country to three, following previously reported cases in Taita Taveta and Busia counties.

The Ministry has assured the public that the patient is under close observation and that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent further spread of the disease.

“The Ministry would like to inform the public of a third laboratory confirmed case of the disease in Nairobi.The patient is a 30-year-old female with a history of travel to Uganda one week ago.She is currently in stable condition undergoing management in an isolation unit in Nairobi,” read the statement.

The Ministry is working with health authorities to conduct contact tracing and provide medical assistance to those who may have been in contact with the patient.Active surveillance efforts are ongoing across the country to detect any new cases of Mpox and to control the spread of the virus.

“Further, active surveillance for suspected cases is ongoing in the country to ensure the spread of the disease is controlled,” the statement read in part.

The Ministry reassures Kenyans that it is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to protecting public health.

“The Ministry continues to work closely with County Governments, other agencies as well as other partners to ensure all necessary measures are in place to protect the public.We encourage everyone to stay informed and follow the recommended health guidelines issued from time by the ministry,” MOH stated.

According to MOH eighty nine samples have been submitted to laboratories for mpox disease testing out of which seventy nine samples have tested negative while three tested positive with seven samples undergoing analysis.

The Ministry of Health continues to advise the public on preventive measures, including practicing good hygiene, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and adhering to guidelines provided by health authorities.
