The Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Forestry, Hon. Aden Duale, welcomed representatives from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), headed by Chief of Mission in Kenya, Ms. Dimanche Sharon, to engage in discussions on effective approaches to tackle migration issues arising from climate change and environmental degradation.

In a post on his X page, the Cabinet Secretary noted that the conversation centered around the implementation of the Kampala Declaration on Migration, Environment, and Climate Change, in which the Ministry is actively involved through participation in meetings with regional Expert Working Groups.

He underscored that the Declaration, which has been officially endorsed by the Government of Kenya, highlights the significance of promoting and fulfilling the commitments it encompasses.

“During the meeting, we emphasized the partnership on climate mobility programs with Kenya, established in February 2024. Kenya actively participates in the recent Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) projects in Dadaab and Kakuma,” CS Aden Duale said.

“The Ministry and IOM continue to partner in the development of funding proposals for multiple opportunities, including the African Development Bank funding opportunity,” Mr. Duale added.

The CS also mentioned that IOM is setting up a Climate Mobility Innovation Lab in Nairobi, which will support Kenya and the broader region with climate research.

He noted that the Lab is expected to be launched at the second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2) in September 2025. The meeting was attended by Climate Change Director, Dr. Pacifica Ogolla.
