The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a crucial update regarding Cyclone Laly, which is currently active in the Indian Ocean.

The department has cautioned Kenyans to prepare for significantly increased rainfall across several parts of the country as a result of the cyclone’s effects.

In a statement released on Monday, Kenya Met highlighted that Nairobi and other highland regions, including the Rift Valley are expected to experience heavy rains.

The advisory identified the following areas as potential concerns: Kisumu, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Narok and Baringo.

The storm, characterized by heavy rainfall and potentially strong winds, is moving through the South-West Indian Ocean.

Additionally, the department cautioned that water levels in rivers, lakes and dams are anticipated to stay high.

Kenya is also expected to experience strong southerly winds and large waves from the Indian Ocean as a result.

“The storm is expected to increase rainfall in the western half of the country and parts of the Highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi,” stated the advisory in part.

This is the second cyclone forecasted to affect the Kenyan coast in the past four weeks.

During the last forecasted cyclone, Hidaya, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki prohibited beach activities like swimming and fishing.

However, the cyclone did not impact the country, as it weakened before arriving at Kenya’s coastal towns.

The department urged citizens to stay informed through regular updates and to follow any advisories issued by local authorities.

They also recommended securing property and being prepared for potential disruptions caused by the increased rainfall, such as flooding and landslides.
