Kenya is in mourning following the passing of veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela, a towering figure in the media industry whose voice and influence shaped generations.
Mbotela, who passed away this morning, was a dedicated journalist, sports commentator, and radio personality who left an indelible mark on the country’s broadcasting landscape.
Mbotela’s career spanned decades, during which he became a household name.
Leaders, journalists, and fans have expressed their sorrow and gratitude for Mbotela’s immense contributions.
“We are heartbroken by the death of veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela.He was a gifted and powerful broadcaster whose alluring voice dominated our airwaves with his first-class football commentaries and the signature programme “Je, Huu Ni Ungwana?” President Ruto remarked.
His iconic voice and storytelling abilities made him not only an entertainer but also a trusted source of information and a mentor to many young journalists.
“My deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the legendary Leonard Mambo Mbotela. His iconic voice and dedication to journalism brought us together, leaving an unforgettable mark on the industry and beyond,” noted Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
“Mzee Leonard Mambo Mbotela was a great Kenyan. He was a patriot who worked hard to ensure the public was well informed through his programs especially that of ‘Je Huu Ni Ungwana?’ which was aired on the National Broadcaster KBC.His voice will be remembered by many at the time the country was undergoing some political challenges. He came out as an assuring voice calming the country and giving hope to the citizens that the future is bright,” former President Uhuru Kenyatta stated.
Raila Odinga cited Mbotela’s captivating football commentaries which brought the beautiful game to life for millions of Kenyans, while his signature program, “Je, Huu Ni Ungwana?” served as a moral compass, educating and enlightening audiences on matters of ethics and social conduct.
“As a sports journalist, Mr. Mbotela excelled as an outstanding football commentator who made radio football commentary lively to listeners,” stated Odinga.
“His popular educative program Jee Huu ni Ungwana remains etched on the memory of many listeners as a moral compass on social relations,” added Odinga.
KBC Managing Director Agnes Kalekye on her part described Mbotela as a cherished member in KBC Radio Department who transformed lives of many broadcasters.
“As a pioneer Broadcaster, Leonard Mambo Mbotela transformed the way we connect with our audience, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts and minds through, ‘Je Huu Ni Uungwana?’ contributions to society issues.He qill forever be remembered and cherished,” KBC MD reiterated.
