President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent his condolences to President John Pombe Magufuli and Tanzanians following an earthquake that killed at least 16 people on Saturday.
Others were injured and property destroyed.
Uhuru said Kenya will donate iron sheets, blankets and mattresses that will be airlifted by the Kenya Defence Forces today to assist those affected.
“I have learnt with deep sorrow and regret the loss of 16 precious lives, injury to hundreds of our Tanzanian brothers and sisters, as well massive destruction of property and livelihoods, following the devastating earthquake in Bukoba district, in North Western Tanzania,” the President said.
“On behalf of the government and the people of Kenya, I extend heartfelt condolences and sympathies to Your Excellency, the government and people of Tanzania, and particularly to the grieving families.”
He wished those injured quick recovery and prayed that God comforts the bereaved.The 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit northwestern Tanzania, near the shores of Lake Victoria.
The aftershocks were felt as far as western Kenya and parts of Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.
Images posted on social media showed significant damage to buildings.A magnitude six quake struck the Tanzanian town of Arusha in July 2007.
