By Cindy Kawira

In a significant move to enhance diplomatic relations between Kenya and Peru, Ambassador Josphat K. Maikara, EBS, Deputy Director General of the Americas & the Caribbean Directorate at Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with H.E. Mrs. Romy Tincopa, the Ambassador of Peru to Kenya.

The meeting, which took place on August 7, 2024, signalled a turning point in bilateral cooperation and emphasized the long-standing, cordial relations between the two countries.

During the discussions, both ambassadors conveyed their gratitude for the long-lasting cooperation that has defined Kenya-Peru relations throughout the years.

They noted with pride that the Government of Peru had re-opened its Embassy in Nairobi in 2023, a move that was interpreted as a sign of the two nations’ growing friendship and shared commitment to promoting tighter cooperation.

The re-establishment of the Peruvian Embassy in Nairobi following a period of closure was cited as a significant development in the field of diplomacy.

In addition to reaffirming Peru’s commitment to fortify its position in Kenya, it creates fresh opportunities for improved participation in several areas, such as trade, culture, and education.

Through multiple accreditations, Ambassadors Maikara and Tincopa looked at the possibilities of significantly extending Kenya’s diplomatic reach in South America.

This strategic consideration reflects Kenya’s growing interest in strengthening its relations with South American nations and enhancing its influence in the region.

By broadening its diplomatic outreach, Kenya aims to increase cooperation, draw in investment, and advance cultural contact between the two regions.

The status of the two countries’ relations was also discussed at the conference with both sides expressing a desire to finalise the outstanding instruments of cooperation as soon as possible.

It is expected that these agreements will set the stage for more organised and fruitful collaboration, which will be advantageous to the people of both nations.

The specific areas of cooperation under discussion include trade agreements, cultural exchange programs, and collaboration in fields such as agriculture and environmental conservation.

In his remarks, Ambassador Maikara thanked Ambassador Tincopa for her visit and warmly welcomed her to Kenya.

He reaffirmed the Kenyan government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening ties with Peru, emphasising the importance of these initiatives for the welfare of the people of both countries.

Ambassador Tincopa, in response, expressed her gratitude for the warm reception and conveyed Peru’s eagerness to work closely with Kenya to advance shared interests.
