Kenya Reaffirms Commitment To The One China Policy In The Thick Of Taiwan’s Elections

The Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs H.E. (Dr.) Musalia Mudavadi held a meeting with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Kenya, Amb. Zhou Pingjian, during which they discussed bilateral issues of mutual interest.

The Prime Cabinet Secretary took the opportunity to reiterate Kenya’s firm position on the One China Policy and the need to respect territorial integrity and non-interference in the domestic affairs of China.

Further, the Ambassador was apprised of the Cabinet decision approving and authorizing Kenya to become a member of the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). This move is aimed at further supporting bilateral economic development efforts.

The One China principle is the position held by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that there is only one sovereign state under the name China, with the PRC serving as the sole legitimate government of that China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.

It is opposed to the idea that two states holding the name “China”, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC); as well as the idea that China and Taiwan form two separate countries.

Taiwan’s pro-sovereignty Democratic Progressive Party candidate, Lai Ching-te won the presidential election held on Saturday.
