In a jubilant ceremony on Wednesday evening, the Kenya Shujaa rugby team was awarded millions by the government, celebrating their triumphant return to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
The event, held at the State House, recognized the players’ hard work, dedication and remarkable achievements, marking a significant moment for Kenyan sports.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba presented a cheque for Ksh 5.7 million in recognition of the team’s exceptional accomplishment.
The ceremony saw each player receiving a substantial monetary reward, intended not only as a recognition of their achievements but also as an encouragement to continue excelling in their sport.
Every squad member, including the coaching staff, is set to be awarded Ksh 300,000.
During the dinner event, Namwamba praised the Shujaa team’s performance, describing it as the ideal present for Kenya on its 61st Madaraka Day.
“You gave Kenya the greatest Madaraka Day gift we could have ever wished for,” Namwamba proclaimed.
The Shujaa team’s recent victory has not only elevated Kenya’s status in the international rugby scene but has also united the nation in celebration.
Fans across the country have expressed their pride and support for the team, reinforcing the role of sports in bringing people together and promoting national unity.
Kenya’s re-entry into the World Rugby Sevens Series is a major achievement after being demoted last year following 23 years of involvement.
The team’s path back to the top level of rugby sevens has been widely praised as a demonstration of their determination and commitment.
The Shujaa team secured their qualification with a commanding win over Germany in Madrid.
They achieved a 33-15 victory in the relegation play-off match, scoring five tries and converting four, sealing their return to the World Rugby Sevens Series.
This success follows meticulous planning by the Ministry of Sports, with the goal of reinstating Kenya as one of the 12 core nations in the World Rugby Sevens Series, joining South Africa from the region.
During his time in Madrid, Spain, Namwamba praised the Shujaa team for their qualification for the 2025 World Sevens Series and reassured them of the government’s ongoing support.
He emphasized that Kenya’s position among the top 12 rugby sevens nations globally is a significant accomplishment that deserves substantial assistance.
