In a significant step towards enhancing labour rights and protections, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has announced its commitment to ratifying several key international conventions aimed at promoting decent work, preventing child trafficking and child labour, and improving labour migration standards.
The decision follows a productive meeting with the delegation from the International Labour Organization (ILO) Kenya, led by Country Director Caroline Mugalla Khamati.
Speaking after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection Dr. Alfred Mutua reaffirmed its dedication to upholding global labour standards that prioritize the dignity, rights, and safety of every worker.
As part of its efforts to empower Kenyan workers, the Ministry is set to launch nationwide roadshows to raise awareness about overseas job opportunities, with a particular focus on rural areas.
“I emphasized our commitment to upholding global labour standards. We plan to launch nationwide roadshows to raise awareness about overseas job opportunities, particularly in rural areas, and we’re working with recruitment agencies to ensure fair practices,” said CS Mutua.
Director Mugalla emphasized the ILO’s ongoing support for Kenya’s efforts to strengthen labour protections, particularly for vulnerable groups.
“Additionally, we’re focused on educating Kenyan workers about their rights, with ILO’s continued support in strengthening the National Labour Board. This collaboration will empower and protect our workers, especially in vulnerable sectors,” stated Dr.Mugalla.
Additionally, the ILO is supporting Kenya in strengthening the Labour Relations Court to ensure fair and timely resolution of labour disputes.
The establishment of the Kenya Migrant Workers Welfare Fund is an initiative aimed at protecting the rights and welfare of Kenyan workers abroad.
According to the ministry, this fund will provide a safety net for migrant workers, ensuring they have access to necessary resources and support in case of emergencies or violations of their rights.
This initiative aims to ensure that both workers and employers are well-informed about their rights and obligations, promoting a fair and just labour environment.
However the initiative reflects Kenya’s dedication to not only meeting international labour standards but also setting a benchmark for labour rights and protections in the region.
