Kenya has pledged its support for the Atoms for Food Initiative, a groundbreaking project spearheaded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
This initiative aims to leverage nuclear technology to boost agricultural productivity and advance food security across Africa and beyond.
“We applaud the International Atomic Energy Agency for spearheading the Atoms for Food Initiative — a joint effort with the Food and Agriculture Organisation,” President Ruto stated.
In a meeting held in New York with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the implementation of this innovative program.
“We will advocate for the implementation of this initiative, which aims to harness the benefits of nuclear technology to enhance agricultural productivity, furthering food security in Africa and beyond,” added the President.
The Atoms for Food Initiative focuses on improving crop yields, enhancing soil health, and strengthening the ability to combat pests and diseases through nuclear techniques.
It is seen as a key driver in achieving sustainable agricultural growth and improving livelihoods across the continent.
During the discussions, Kenya and the IAEA also explored avenues for enhancing cancer care within the country.
The IAEA has committed to providing Kenya with additional equipment for the early detection and treatment of cancer, underscoring its broader mission of promoting global health.
The talks concluded with a shared vision of furthering global peace, emphasizing the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Both parties reiterated their dedication to promoting a nuclear-free world while continuing to explore the beneficial applications of nuclear science in sectors like agriculture and healthcare.
Kenya looks forward to working closely with the IAEA and FAO to implement these initiatives and enhance the country’s agricultural and health sectors, ensuring a better future for its people and the region.
