Kenya Urges UNSC To Strengthen, Renew Support For Security Mission In Haiti

By Dorothy Musyoka

Kenya has called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to renew the mandate of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) in haiti and adopt innovative approaches to ensure it is adequately resourced.

“Kenya calls on the United Nations Security Council to renew the Multinational Security Support Mission’s mandate and adopt innovative approaches to resource it,” reiterated President Ruto.

The appeal was made during the Leader-Level Meeting of the Economic and Social Council Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Haiti, held at the United Nations Headquarters.

Kenya’s representative emphasized the need for the international community to intensify its support to the Mission, which has already demonstrated significant positive outcomes in revitalizing economic activity and instilling hope among the Haitian people.

“The international community must also intensify its support to the Mission, which has yielded significant positive outcomes — reviving economic activity and hope in Haiti,” noted President Ruto.

Highlighting the success of the Mission in creating a safer environment for businesses and communities, the representative urged the Security Council to explore innovative solutions for sustained funding and resources.

This, they argued, would enable the MSSM to continue its crucial work, build on the gains already achieved, and ensure long-term peace and development in Haiti.

The meeting, attended by global leaders and representatives of international organizations, focused on strengthening support for Haiti’s socio-economic recovery.

Kenya’s call was echoed by other member states, reinforcing the global commitment to a collaborative approach in addressing the challenges facing the Caribbean nation.

Kenya’s proactive stance in advocating for the renewal and reinforcement of the Multinational Security Support Mission underscores its dedication to promoting global peace and security.

It also reflects Kenya’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and the shared responsibility of the international community in supporting countries emerging from crisis.

The Security Council is expected to deliberate on the renewal of the MSSM mandate in the coming weeks, with Kenya advocating for a robust and well-resourced mission to support the Haitian people in building a stable and prosperous future.
