A family hailing from Kilifi County has called on authorities to help unravel the mysterious death of their In Saudi Arabia.
The family is also seeking government help to help it repatriate the body of its kin Twenty year-old Mary Samuel Charo, a mother of one child flew to the gulf in last year 2021 for a job opportunity that turned out to be a poisoned chalice for her. The young lady landed in the hands of a cruel employer who, according to sources, maltreated her to death. Mary is said to have been starved and tortured by cruel her employer. According to her brother Khamis Athman, Mary sent a distress call to her family in Kenya narrating how she was being tortured by her employer and pleading to be brought back to the country. Their family tried to reach the deceased later but her phone was switched off. According to Khamis, the family later sought help from Rose Odunga, the agent who facilitated Mary to go work in Saudi Arabia without success. “Mary used to call me, saying she was being mistreated, tortured and denied food by her employer, later I lost communication with her; only to receive a call today morning from gulf by unknown person who informed me about the demise of my sister said ,” Khamis. Francis Auma, a rapid response officer at Muslim for Human Rights condemned the death and asked the government to help the family get the body and justice. “This year alone, we have received four cases of Kenyans dying in Saudi Arabia. The government has neglected its people. We don’t even get reports on the causes of their deaths,” Auma said. Auma accused recruitment agents of “duping innocent Kenyans into modern-day slavery” to make money, without caring about their victims. The human rights officer called for investigations into Mary’s death. |
