A Kenyan woman, Ms. Lilian Seenoi-Barr from Mau Narok in Narok County, made history by being inaugurated as the first black mayor of the Derry and Strabane District Council in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom.
“With outgoing Mayor of Derry City Patricia Logue and the Incoming Mayor Lilian Seenoi ahead of the official handover happening today at Guildhall, Derry City. Lilian is the first black mayor. It’s a proud moment for Kenya. She comes from Narok.” Senator Sifuna said.
Ms. Lilian, a dedicated advocate for human rights, social justice, and community unity, was elected to represent the Foyleside area on the Derry and Strabane Council.
“Her leadership and dedication have learned her widespread respect and admiration, both locally and nationally. Lilian historic appointment as a mayor signifies a significant step forward for Derry and Strabane, reflecting the region’s evolving diversity and commitment to inclusivity,” added the Senate Speaker.
Senate Speaker Hon. Amason Kingi, who was the Chief Guest congratulated the new mayor for breaking the glass ceiling.
“Today’s Installation of Mayor Lilian Seenoi-Barr is the latest in the irrepressible rise by women to high leadership positions not just here in Ireland but also globally,” Senator Kingi said.
“Its clear proof of the gains of democracy,” he added.
According to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, her election to represent the Foyleside area on the Derry and Strabane Council will bolster Ms. Lilian’s ongoing advocacy for human rights, social justice, and community unity relating to terrible memories occasioned by police brutality.
“A tour of the Museum of Free Derry has evoked terrible memories of our own experiences with police brutality and State sanctioned violence on peaceful protesters. It took over 12 years and millions of dollars for the victims of Bloody Sunday in Derry to be vindicated. Justice comes, eventually,” Senator Sifuna added.
Among the other Kenyans who attended the ceremony were Kenya’s Deputy Head of Mission Edwin Afande, Suba North MP Hon. Millie Odhiambo, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, and Nominated Senator Prof. Margaret Kamar.
