The Kenya’s Harambee Junior Starlets Make History as First Team to Qualify for FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Receiving National Flag from President William Ruto ahead of Spain Camp.

The Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports stated that participation in a FIFA World Cup enhances a nation’s football reputation and provides players with significant opportunities in their professional careers.

Hon. Murkomen joined H.E President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi on Wednesday 18th September 2024, in a ceremony to hand over the national flag to the Harambee Junior Starlets team, which is participating in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic.

The team, which is leaving for camp training in Spain today, made history by becoming the first Kenyan football team to ever qualify for a FIFA World Cup competition.

According to the CS for Sports the girls are immensely talented and ambitious.

“I urged them to give the tournament their all and write more history by scoring goals and advancing all the way to the finals,” Hon. Murkomen said on X.

“I salute everyone who made this happen – the players, the coaches, the technical staff and FKF. With the support of H.E. the President, one player who was injured and two others who didn’t make the team will travel with them as fans,” added the CS.

Hon. Murkomen also highlighted that the President’s directive to use the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund to support sports and arts in primary and secondary schools is directly responsible for the success witnessed now.

The CS for Sports wished the Harambee Junior Starlets the best in their forthcoming competition.  “All the best to our girls. Go forth and win!”

The CS further promised that the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports will work more closely with the Ministry of Education to further integrate talent and academics for greater success in both spheres.
