KIAMBU COUNTY GOVERNMENT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH COLLEGES TO HELP YOUTHS ACQUIRE GOOD SKILLS

Kiambu county government will partner with colleges within Kiambu to try and fill the gap left by students who don’t make it to University.

Speaking in Thika during a three days trade fair Kiambu governor James Nyoro said that 60% of students who have finished form four are left out of University admissions thus a need to help them acquire skills from colleges and other technical institutions.

Nyoro said there are 39 vocational training centres in Kiambu county with a total of 4,188 trainees saying that the county government’s vision is to have all 62 wards in Kiambu county get a vocational centre each.

Youths who have joined these institutions are trained in motor vehicle mechanics, electrical installation, welding and metal fabrication, hairdressing, catering, plumbing, masonry, carpentry and joinery.

He said that the county government saw it fit to have trainees in the county vocational and technical centers and even those who have graduated are also engaged in acquiring good skills.

The governor further said that his government would consult with education stakeholders and come up with a strategic plan on how the county government can chip in.

Felistas Wairimu who is the coordinator of the trade fair said students take a long time to decide whether to join colleges and that they organized the tradefair to bring the colleges and the students together.
